Game-Based Learning

Many learners around the world struggle to succeed in the classes and courses they take. The learning process, in the eyes of many of them, is a boring duty that does not include any kind of fun.

But what if we could make it completely different? What if the learning process became, in the eyes of learners, an enjoyable activity that they yearn to do?!

In fact, this idea has been applied in real life. Nowadays, there are many games designed with this goal. Many teachers have tried these games with their students and have achieved amazing results. Success rates increase in every class after adopting game-based learning. More students are applying to register for classes. Average grades of students increase after adopting games as a mean of learning.

The principle of game-based learning is based on designing a game of any kind, whether digital, card game, board game, activity game, or challenges, that includes the basic knowledge the learner must acquire. The principle of the game and the playing mechanism are explained by the teacher, who is present at all times to supervise the progress of the game or answer various questions. The role of the teacher may be limited to specific stages only, depending on the type of game. The game certainly includes different stages through which the learner or player advances after completing the required tasks or gaining a sufficient amount of points. This method has many advantages that benefit learners and affect the quality and speed of the learning process. The visual and audio aids that are used lead to a better understanding of the learning topics. The activities and interactions that learners engage in cause the information to become better embedded in their minds. This leads to better memory. The nature of interactive games may also give learners necessary skills such as self-expression, quick wit, self-confidence, and working in a team.

The Flipped Classroom Model

The learning process in traditional classrooms includes two stages. First, in class, the teacher explains the educational material to the students. Then, in the second stage, students do their homework at home, solve exercises, and perform various tasks.

In the flipped classroom model the stages are reversed. In the first stage, students at home view the educational content assigned to them, through educational videos that the teacher has prepared in advance. Students take notes and record questions at home. Then in the second stage, students ask their questions to the teacher in class, and solve the various exercises together and under the teacher’s supervision.

This method benefits students, as each student is able to receive educational content at the appropriate pace for him. Educational videos can be paused or replayed more than once, and can include animation for explanation and clarification.

This method also benefits the teacher as well. Instead of explaining the same lessons every year to class after class, the teacher explains the educational content all at once. The teacher can add modifications to the videos whenever he wants.

This way the teacher can better focus on each individual student to ensure effective individual progress.

Social-Emotional learning ( SEL )

Social-emotional learning is one of the new fields of learning that aims to improve an individual’s skills on a psychological and social level. Social-emotional learning begins at an early age, and the younger the learner is when this type of learning begins, the better the results.

Social-emotional learning includes four main themes. First, self-awareness. This type of learning aims to develop a person’s understanding of himself, his various feelings and behaviors, and their impact on others and the environment surrounding him. The learner can develop positive feelings such as empathy for others and happiness for their success. Negative feelings such as anxiety, tension, and envy can be reduced or removed.

Secondly, social awareness. Social awareness means the ability to understand the feelings of others and the ability to communicate with them. Social-emotional education aims to improve an individual’s ability to make appropriate decisions and practice appropriate behaviors in different social situations.

Third, self-management. Social-Emotional education focuses on developing self-control skills, thinking carefully before acting, and making decisions with caution and responsibility.

Finally, interpersonal skills. Social-emotional education is concerned with refining communication skills, self-expression, and accepting the differences of others. When this is achieved, the individual can have more friends with whom he has a healthy relationship.

Sociological studies have shown that individuals who receive social-emotional education show excellence in other areas of education. There is no doubt that an individual who has good psychological and social skills will be able to move on in life better and reach his goals with merit.

These were some of the modern methods and mechanisms in education, and there are undoubtedly many others. We hope that the future will bring more improvements that will make the learning process easier and more enjoyable as well
